Litton Cheney hostel in Dorset

Trudi

Litton Cheney hostel

May Day bank holiday weekend in a traditional Dorset village and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Litton Cheney is surrounded by excellent walking and cycling country. Litton Cheney hostel is a converted Dutch Barn, once a cheese factory, about two miles from the coastal path, and also close to spectacular Chesil Beach.

The Devon and Dorset coast is known as the Jurassic Coast because of its abundance of fossils. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001, putting it on a par with the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Great Wall of China!

We've reserved the whole hostel for 3 nights.

Deposit £30 to book your bed. Estimated total £57.

Sunday 11th May

Saffron Walden hostel garden

Saffron Walden Hostel Garden

Ali

Last time I visited the garden looked in pretty good shape, but Richard (the new Warden) still has a couple of jobs for us to do. Dave and I will be here from 11am, but people will be welcome throughout the day. Please give me a ring to let me if you are thinking of joining us so I know roughly how many are coming, as I shall be preparing a sumptuous lunch for the workers.

Some heavy spade work, lots of light weeding, please bring any tools you think might be useful.

See some pictures of our work to restore the garden over the last few years.

Wednesday 14th May

Committee Meeting

Everyone welcome. We will be discussing Wednesday nights for July and weekends away for late Summer/Autumn. All suggestions welcome.

Sunday 18th May

Three Counties Walk for Epilepsy

A group of us did this walk last year, organised by the National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy, through the pretty countryside of Kent, Surrey and Sussex. You get to do a fabulous walk with the extra glow you get inside for helping out a worthy cause. If anyone is interested this year, Marion will pass on the details.

Wednesday 21st May

Ireland Quiz

Dave J

How much do you know about one of our nearest neighbours? Who's ever heard of a King called Brian? And why do they call their Prime Minister a Tea Shop? All this and much, much more as we prepare ourselves for next week's trip.

A Week in Donegal and Antrim

Jim & Dave J

There has been a tremendously enthusiastic response to this trip, and it is now full. Flights, cars and hostels have been booked.

Saturday 24 May:

Greenes Hostel, Dungloe Easyjet flight 253 departs Stansted 1255 arriving Belfast International 1410. Pick up hire cars for the 135 mile drive to Dunglow on the Donegal coast in the Republic. We will be staying in Greenes Hostel, an independent hostel in the town. This is among the richest scenery in Ireland with a spectacular 200 mile coastline and the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Close by are the Derryveagh mountains, including the imposing and starkly beautiful Errigal, a 751 metre peak from which the views can include the whole of Ulster. There is good walking to be had in other local hills including the Blue Stack mountains.

Wednesday 28 May:

Drive the 120 miles to Ballintoy, Antrim, Northern Ireland to Sheep Island View hostel on the coast in a modern purpose built independent hostel. Coastal path walks to the Giant's Causeway, the Bushmills whiskey distillery is not too far away and the main walking country is in the nine Glens of Antrim which bisect a series of 1,200-1,800 foot hills from which the Mull of Kintyre, Islay and Jura can be seen. The area is also rich in prehistoric sites - burial grounds and standing stones.

Ballintoy, Antrim Coast

Sunday 1 June:

Drive to Belfast for the flight back to Stansted. Easyjet flight 256 leaving 1630 arrives 1745.

Flying gives us extra time in the country without spending 2 to 3 days in the car.

Remember: for security reasons you need photographic ID to get on the flight (passport or photo driving licence).

Baggage allowance is 20kg hold and 5 kg cabin.

Estimated total cost: £340 for flights, car hire, hostels, petrol and food.

(see also detailed plans and costings)
