Easter Planning & Mountain Safety

Thursday 17th April to Tuesday 22nd April

Eskdale, Lake DistrictThe Eskdale Centre

Dave

Where all the best people are spending this Easter!

Eskdale is in the south western part of the Lake District, close to Scafell and Wastwater. The Eskdale Centre is a former village school now used as an outdoor centre. It has dormitories, showers, full central heating, well equipped kitchen (including catering oven and freezer), drying room etc.

(for more details, see the Eskdale Centre website, and see pictures of our last visit).

The Ravenglass and Eskdale miniature steam railway runs from Dalegarth station (100m from the centre) to the coast at Ravenglass. There are many options for walks between stations on the line.

Scafell, view from above BootOther nearby attractions include Muncaster castle, Hardknott Roman fort, Muncaster and Eskdale water mills, a choice of pubs, and England's highest mountains!

The centre is available to us for five nights. It is easily reached from the A595 Barrow to Whitehaven road, via Santon Bridge. Half a mile east of Eskdale Green, turn off opposite George IV pub, towards Boot and Hardknott. The centre is on the left after 1½ miles, opposite the track to Trough House Bridge. Grid ref NY172006, see map. (If you get to Dalegarth station you've gone 100m too far). The car park is small, but there is ample additional parking at the top of the centre's field. If you need to contact us there, the centre payphone number is 019467 23377.

The cost will be about £10 per night (including food), plus £25 to the petrol fund for those sharing lifts from Chelmsford. You will need to bring a sleeping bag.

Deposit £20 to book your bed

Wednesday 23rd April

Sign Language

Lynn

Learn some useful and polite signs to use amongst the deaf. Hopefully we will learn the alphabet, how to introduce yourself and some useful information for deaf walkers - how to communicate some small talk, and ask for help. The evening should be fun and will provide opportunity for everyone to participate.

Lapland Talk

John M

John will be giving us an illustrated talk on his visit to Lapland last summer. John went to see the midnight sun and saw much more: herds of reindeer, inquisitive whales, mountains to inspire another Wordsworth, four-thousand year old rock carvings, rivers full of salmon, tundra forests, friendly mosquitoes and the cleanest air beyond the Arctic. Come along and find out why it is rude to call a Lapp a 'Lapp', hear what the Lapp answer to Swiss Yodeling sounds like, why visiting Lapland is a must for all patriotic Thailanders, and why £2000 to fish on a river bank for three weeks still attracts people. Also, what it is like to live with no sunlight for eight weeks of the year. This and plenty more on 30th April.

For a preview, see John's website.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
