Sunday 2nd March Anglesey Abbey Walk Anglesey Abbey is a National Trust property six miles north east of Cambridge, famed for it's Winter Garden and spectacular display of snowdrops in early spring. We'll meet in the Anglesey Abbey car park at 11am (on B1102, grid ref TL533622) for a look round the Abbey grounds plus a 5½ mile walk around Stow Cum Quy Fen. Extensive views including Quy Water and the picturesque Lode Mill (a working watermill). We recommended that you bring some sandwiches for your lunch, but will probably visit the National Trust café in the afternoon. Meet at 11am in the Anglesey Abbey car park (on B1102, grid ref TL533622, see map). Contact Trudi if you want to share lifts. Wednesday 5th March The Inn on the Green Spend a quiet evening chatting with friends over a pint of ale and catch up on all the gossip. Meet in the Inn on the Green, Writtle, from about 8.30 onwards. Wednesday 12th March Committee Meeting Everyone welcome. We will be discussing Wednesday nights for May and weekends away for the Summer ahead. All suggestions welcome. Friday 14th to Sunday 16th March The hostel is an 18th century water mill spanning the river Itchen and, with its low beams, mill machinery and lofty hall will provide a unique place to stay in this historic town. The capital of Alfred the Great and the place where Richard the Lionheart was crowned, the history can be still seen in the two original medieval city gateways, the 14th century Winchester College (England's oldest public school), the guildhall and Winchester Cathedral. The New Forest is not too far away but the city itself and the more local countryside provides more than ample scope for walking . Bear in mind that this is a simple hostel, and the dining room is unheated, so bring your thermals! Deposit £20 will book your place. Total cost about £36. Wednesday 19th March Lord Arthur Savile's Crime Another stupendous offering from the Chelmsford Theatre Workshop. Join Trudi for a play about palm-reading, marriage and murder with the wit of Oscar Wilde running through it like Brighton in a stick of rock. Play starts at 7.45pm at the Old Court Theatre, 233 Springfield Road, Chelmsford (opposite the prison). All tickets are £5 (£4 concessions), available on the door, or in advance from the Civic Theatre Box Office on 01245 606505. Venezuela Uncovered You've heard the stories, now see the slide show! Fabulous images from the other side of the world as James, Tom & Gerry braved riots, waterfalls, capsizing canoes and scary plane rides. (See story and pictures of the trip, and also some pictures of Gerry's first trip to Venezuela) Sunday 30th March Chelmer and Blackwater Canal Walk Moved from it's traditional Jan/Feb time to the warmer and longer days of March. Take this opportunity to join us on a walk through the heart of Essex, from Heybridge Basin along the Blackwater and the Chelmer canals to Chelmsford, the county town. The walk is approximately 14 miles end-to-end. We'll probably stop for a pint in the afternoon at the Rodney, Little Baddow, but please bring sandwiches for lunch. We shall leave cars at each end as this is a linear walk. Meet at the YMCA in Chelmsford at 10.00am or Heybridge Basin car park (TL870069, see map) at 10.30am. Don't forget that British Summer Time begins this morning - put your clock forward or else you'll be an hour late! Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford |
