Easter Trip to the Lake District

Dave P

Rydal Water

We have booked Rydal Hall Youth Centre for 5 nights, near Ambleside in the Lake District. Sheltered by the high fells of Fairfield and its neighbours, Rydal enjoys outstanding views toward Windermere, and provides an excellent base for walking.

The building has undergone a major refurbishment and is much improved since our last visit. Facilities include fully equipped kitchen, Bathroom/shower facilities, large common room with wood burning stove. Pillows are provided, but you'll need to bring a sleeping bag.

To find it, follow A591 for two miles north from Ambleside. In Rydal, turn right into the lane towards Rydal Mount, pass the church and take the second entrance on the right (just beyond the main gate of the hall). Pass behind the hall and over a small bridge. The youth centre is the large white building on the left (postcode LA22 9LX).

£30 deposit to book a bed please. Total cost will be about £20 per night including meals, plus £45 towards petrol for those sharing lifts from Essex.

St Peter’s Way part 3

Jim

Meet at Esplanade East by the Marina, Maylandsea (see map) at 10am for a car shuffle to Bicknacre for a linear 12 mile walk back to Maylandsea.

Stage 3 of the St Peters Way takes us from rolling countryside and woods, via fens, to the sea at Maylandsea, from Bicknacre via Purleigh and Mundon. Things of interest to look out for include the vineyard at Purleigh, the old Maldon to Woodham Ferrers railway, St Marys Church at Mundon Hall, and Mundon creek towards the end of the walk.

Please bring sandwiches, but at least one pub stop is planned.

Wednesday 17th April
