Wednesday 1st May Pub Quiz Jim Join Jim for a bit of intellectual stimulation at the Riverside Inn in Victoria Road, Chelmsford. Registration for the quiz is at 8pm, but food is available if you want to get there a bit earlier. Friday 3rd to Monday 6th May Street in Somerset Dave P Bank Holiday weekend at this Swiss-chalet style hostel near Glastonbury. Climb the Tor, walk in the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels. Also visiting the seaside at Weston-super-Mare might be possible, and the Quantock Hills are not far away. Directions: From Street, take the Somerton road (B3151) south for two miles. Turn right at the Marshall Elms crossroads signposted for Bridgwater A39. The hostel is 500 yards on the right. If you're using a Sat Nav please enter the location as 'Street', the road name as 'Cockrod' and select 'Marshall Elms Cross Road', don't use the hostel postcode. (grid ref ST480345) Deposit £39 will book your bed for the 3 nights Total cost of the weekend will be about £80, including meals and petrol contribution. Wednesday 8th May Committee Meeting We’ll be planning Wednesdays for August and trips away for mid winter. Wednesday 15th May Burma Slide Show Doug Join us for highlights of Doug’s recent trip to Burma (or is that Myanmar?), “an untouched treasure trove of exotic and varied attractions”. Sunday 19th May Canal Walk Dave P A walk through the heart of Essex, from Chelmsford to Heybridge Basin, along the towpath of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. The walk is about 14 miles. We’ll probably stop for tea in the afternoon at Paper Mill lock, and finish with a pint at The Old Ship, but please bring sandwiches for lunch. Meet at the Heybridge Basin Daisy Meadow car park (grid ref TL870069, see map) at 10:00am (Heybridge Basin is signposted from the B1026 between Heybridge and Goldhanger). We’ll leave most of our cars at Heybridge Basin, and organise lifts to Chelmsford, to walk back to Heybridge. Wednesday 22nd May Pub walk - Boreham Ali Meet outside the Queen’s Head, next to the church, in Church Road, Boreham at 7:30pm for a 4 mile walk out to Papermill Lock and back to the pub for a night cap. We should be back before dark, but best bring a torch just in case. Parking at the pub is a bit limited, but there’s plenty of parking round the corner in Plantation Rd or Juniper Rd. 25th May to 2nd or 9th June Explore the Outer Hebrides Dave P We’re planning a trip based on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Option A: Two week trip
25th May: Drive to Pitlochry; overnight at Pitlochry SYHA.
26th May: drive to Ullapool for ferry (1815) to Stornoway. 6 nights at "No.5"
Croft House, Drinishader, South Harris.
1st June: Ferry 1140 Leverburgh to Berneray, 3 nights South Uist (Uist Bunkhouse, Daliburgh).
4th June: Ferry 1300 Eriskay to Ardmhor (Barra) for 2 nights at Dunard hostel, Castlebay.
6th June: Ferry 1516 Castlebay to Tiree for 2 nights at Millhouse Hostel.
8th June: Ferry 1115 Tiree to Oban. Night at Oban SYHA.
9th June: Drive home. Option B: One week trip
