Ireland Slide Show

Jim will be showing slides from our spectacular trip to Donegal and Antrim. If you were not with us, come and see what you were missing. If you were one of the Ireland crew, come along to reminisce and share your own pictures with the group.

Sunday 7th September

The Essex Castle Cycle Ride

James

A sponsored cycle ride in aid of CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood). Entry fee £12 or £11 if we get a team of 5. Choice of 15, 50 or 70 mile routes start and finish at Kings Head Meadow Catchpool Road (Off Cowdaray Ave.) in Colchester. James intends to do the 50 miles route; please contact him at least a week before if you're interested.

Everyone welcome to plan Wednesday meetings for November, and trips for next year.


Friday 12th September

Chappel Beer Festival

Visit the 17th Chappel Beer Festival at the East Anglian Railway Museum. Over 300 different real ales, live entertainment, hot and cold food available, including hog roast.

Meet at Chelmsford railway station for the 19:17 train to Chappel and Wakes Colne (change at Marks Tey).


Saturday 13th September

Saffron Walden Hostel Open Day

Saffron Walden hostel

As part of the National Heritage Open days scheme, the hostel will be open all day. The hostel, the oldest inhabited building in Saffron Walden, is a former maltings with parts dating from 1402, and well worth looking around. There'll also be a chance to find out more about the plans to improve the hostel. Please feel free to come along, either for a tour of the premises, or bring a trowel and some gloves and join us in the garden for a little routine maintenance. We'll be there from about 11am until 4pm..

Housewarming Barbecue

Come and help warm Marion's new house in Wickford, from 2pm.

Marion will provide food; please bring your own drinks. Let Marion know if you'd like to come, and she can give you directions if needed. Note there is ample car parking almost opposite in a parade of shops, there is NO parking outside the house.

Pub Night: Compasses Littley Green

Come and spend an evening at the charming Compasses Inn in Littley Green (from about 8.30).

Leave Chelmsford on A130 towards Gt.Dunmow; turn right onto B1417 (towards Felsted) for ¾mile; turn right into lane opposite Hartford End Brewery; after another ¾ mile left at T junction, pub is on left. Grid ref TL 699173. See map


19th to 21st September

Canterbury Hostel Weekend

A splendid Victorian villa, less than a mile from the city centre. Close to the Kent Downs, the Hostel is within easy reach of the North Downs Way and Pilgrim's Way footpaths - while the city itself has a cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey, various museums, guided tours and theatres.

£30 deposit will book your bed. Total cost about £40.

St. Kilda Slide Show

In June, Trudi was part of a National Trust working party on St Kilda, the remotest part of the British Isles, 41 miles west of Benbecula in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.

James Fisher, a naturalist, wrote in 1947: "Whatever he studies, the future observer of St Kilda will be haunted the rest of his life by the place, and tantalised by the impossibility of describing it, to those who have not seen it." Tonight, Trudi will attempt the impossible.
