Wednesday Meetings, Weekends Away & Other Events

July 2003

Wednesday 2nd July

Pub Walk

Dave P

Meet at The Cats in Woodham Walter at 7:30pm prompt for a nice walk in the Essex countryside, washed down by a pint or two in the bar afterwards.

From A414 at far end of Danbury, turn left to Woodham Walter, go straight through Wooham Walter village and as you leave the village turn right into the lane signposted to Curling Tye Green. The Cats is on the left after half a mile, at grid ref TL814075 (see map)

Wednesday 9th July

Saffron Walden BBQ

Saffron Walden YH evening barbecue

Ali

We shall be heating up the coals from about 7:30pm, so please join us for a splendid evening of fine food, scintillating conversation and a little light weeding.

Bring your own burgers and drinks, we'll do salad & baps.

Please let Ali know if you're coming so we can judge quantities.

Sunday 13th July

Walk from Cambridge to Ely

Dave P

A gorgeous river walk following the Cam and Great Ouse from Waterbeach to Ely (approx 10 miles). Experience classic wide fenland views, culminating in the sight of Ely Cathedral, the Ship of The Fens, rising majestically above the surrounding land.

The plan is to share lifts to Ely, catch the train to Waterbeach, then walk back to Ely at our leisure (hopefully in time for a cup of tea before driving home).

Meet at Ely railway station to catch the 10:56 train which gets to Waterbeach at 11:05. (Ely station car park is small, but there are several free long stay car parks nearby).

We will probably stop at some of the riverside pubs, but please bring sandwiches for lunch. And please let Dave know if you're coming.

Wednesday 16th July

Theatre Night: M*A*S*H

Trudi

Join Trudi for Chelmsford Theatre Workshop's latest production - the comedy M*A*S*H. Set during the Korean war, this play tells the story of a bunch of unlikely comrades in a medical army surgical unit struggling to keep their sanity whilst surrounded by the horror of war.

All tickets are £5 (£4 concessions), available on the door, or in advance from the Civic Theatre Box Office on 01245 606505. Performance begins at 7.45pm

The Old Court Theatre, 233 Springfield Road, is half a mile from the Chelmsford town centre, opposite the prison.

Friday 18th to Sunday 20th July

Youlgreave, Peak District

Youlgreave hostel

Trudi

"Bedding, Ladies' Lingerie, Men's Underwear, ..." No, not a rerun of "Are you being served?" but simply the names of dormitories in the Youlgreave hostel, a former Co-op store.

This hostel is a unique and impressive building that still retains some of the original features of the old Co-op village store. Youlgreave is an ancient village on the ridge between the River Bradford and Lathkill Dale in the White Peak area of the Peak District National park. It is on the Limestone Way, and nearby moors are famous for their stone circles.

There are walks to Robin Hood Stride and Nine Ladies Stone Circle, bike hire on Tissington, High Peak or Manifold Trails, and there are three pubs in Youlgreave!

Deposit £23. Total cost about £45.

Wednesday 23rd July

Committee Meeting

Everyone welcome. We will be discussing Wednesday nights for September and weekends away for late Autumn. All suggestions welcome.

Wednesday 30th July

Penshurst Place

Talk on Penshurst Place

John

John has volunteered to give us a talk on the history of Penshurst Place and the Sidney family. Essential preparation for our visit on Sunday 3rd August.

The great Elizabethan poet, scholar and diplomat Sir Philip Sidney ('Your need is yet greater than mine') was born at Penshurst and it was here that he planned some of the works that revolutionized poetry in England and so inspired Shakespeare, Marlow and their contemporaries.

Sir Richard Chancellor, a member of the Sidney family and the first Englishman to sail into the White Sea and have dinner with Ivan the Terrible, was a visitor at Penshurst between expeditions.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
