The Three Elms

The Three Elms, Chignal St James

George

Come and help George celebrate his birthday with a meal and a drink at his local, the Three Elms, Chignal St James. Please let George know if you’re joining him for the meal. Meet at 7:30 for the meal and about 8:30 for the drinks.

To find it, leave Chelmsford on the A1060 (Rainsford Rd/Roxwell Rd), turn right at lights into Chignall Road, after 1 mile turn left (Mashbury Rd), signposted Chignall St. James. The Three Elms is on the right after another mile. (Grid ref TL675097)

Essex Police Museum

Wednesday 10th October

Visit to Essex Police Museum

Helen B

Helen has arranged an evening visit to Essex Police headquarters in Springfield, Chelmsford, visiting the Force Information Room and the Police Museum.

Please meet in the Orchard car park at 7:25pm for a tour start at 7:30pm. If you are late, please call Helen on her mobile or the barrier on the car park will be closed and you may be challenged. Note, the curator will wait for latecomers but the visit will still finish at 9pm so we will miss out on stuff if people are tardy.

We park in the Orchard car park. Go down Sandford Rd and take the first road on the left past the rec. ground (Kingston Crescent). You can see Force HQ; do not follow the road round to the right but carry straight on via a concrete road which is not shown on the map. The car park has a barrier which will be open when we arrive.

Saturday 13th October

Monty Python’s Spamalot

Robert

A comedic musical "lovingly ripped off from" the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. “Sets musical theatre back a thousand years!”

Robert’s organising a trip to the Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue to see Spamalot, the 3pm matinee, and a meal afterwards. Balcony tickets are from around £30.

Sue

Sue Couling has invited us to warm her new house with an afternoon walk around Little Dunmow, following which she’ll cook a curry for us all at her house. Meet at 2pm at Sue’s house.

Wednesday 24th October

New Zealand Slide Show

Jim & Tom

Time to see the evidence of Tom & Jim’s splendiferous trip to the other side of the world. Expect mountains, lakes and the odd leap of faith.

Preview some of Jim's pictures here.

Friday 26th to Sunday 28th October

Weekend in Oxford

Jim

Purpose-built hostel located in the heart of the 'City of Dreaming Spires'. Visit historic colleges, museums and pubs. Blenheim Palace and Cotwold walks are also within reach.

We intend to eat out in the town on the Saturday night.

There is a drop-off lay-by outside the hostel, but parking is at the Seacourt Park & Ride about ¾ mile west of the hostel down the A420 (£1 per day, max stay 24hr, last bus towards hostel at 19:50). Suggest that drivers drop passengers and luggage at the hostel before going to P&R and walking back.

Deposit of £34 will book your bed. Total cost about £53 (including hostel breakfasts, but not evening meal).

Wednesday 31st October

Annual General Meeting

The star event of the year! Please make every effort to come to our AGM. We will be reviewing the year’s events and voting on the committee to take us into the next year. We are looking for nominations for new committee members, and voting on important changes to our club constitution.

The proposed changes to the constitution are necessary to reflect our changed relationship with YHA, i.e. we are an independent group who may choose to affiliate to YHA but are not part of, or governed by, YHA. See the draft proposed amendments.

This is a club run by its members, for its members. We’re always keen to find new volunteers to help organise events. It is very important that as many of you as possible come and let us know what you think. Besides, it’s an excellent reason to be out of the house when the Trick-or-Treaters come round.

The meeting starts at 8:30pm in the Charles Peters Lounge of the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
