Wednesday 1st August

Evening Walk: Purleigh

Join us for a beautiful evening's walk from the lovely village of Purleigh. Meet at the Bell pub at 7:30 for a 3¾ mile walk before returning for a welcome drink.

Purleigh is just off the B1010, about 3 miles south east of Danbury. In the centre of the village, turn left up to the church, and the Bell is beside the church (grid ref TL842020; postcode CM3 6QJ, see map).


Wednesday 8th August

Evening Cycle Ride

The Duck, Newney Green

A short cycle ride from Chelmsford, through the park to Writtle and Highwood, to one of our favourite haunts, The Duck at Newney Green. Meet in the Coval Lane car park (near the fire station, just off Waterhouse/Rainsford Lane, grid ref TL700069, see map) at 7:30pm and remember to bring lights as it’ll be dark on the way home (total ride about 8 miles).

Ickworth Walk

A walk from Ickworth House, Horringer, (3 miles SW of Bury St Edmunds on W side of A143, grid ref TL810610, postcode IP29 5QE, see map).

Bring a picnic lunch. There’ll be a chance to look in the house if you want (an extraordinary oval house built by an eccentric Earl), and a seven mile walk around the idyllic 'Capability' Brown park land and through the woods - Ice House Hill, River Linnet, Chevington Iron Pillars, Obelisk and the Fairy Lake. Admission to park and gardens costs £3.50; admission to house £4 extra. National Trust members free! Meet at 11am at the car park.

Committee meeting

We will be trip planning for the new year and organising Wednesday evenings for October. Everybody’s welcome.


Sunday 19th August

Jim’s Birthday Barbi

Join Jim for a birthday celebration, everybody welcome. Bring your own sausages, drinks and preferably something to sit on.

From 2pm at Jim's house.


Wednesday 22nd August

Pub night

Join us at the Shepherd and Dog, London Road, Crays Hill from 8:30pm for an evening’s drink and possibly a pub quiz too. (Crays Hill is on the A129 between Billericay and Wickford, grid ref TQ715923, postcode CM11 2YA, see map).


Friday 24th August to Monday 27th August

YHA Eyam

Peak District: Eyam-Bakewell-Hathersage

A hostel-to-hostel walk in the Peak District, reviving the true spirit of Youth Hostelling!

Friday night at Eyam hostel, a Victorian folly resembling a tiny, turreted castle and perched on the hillside overlooking the historic village of Eyam.

On Saturday walk to Bakewell hostel: Fine views over the historic market town of Bakewell and the Wye Valley.

Sunday walk to Hathersage hostel and on Monday walk back to our cars at Eyam. The longest day is a 12-mile walk.

We will arrange for at least one car to drive between the hostels, which can take a small bag for you if you wish.

Deposit £50 to book your bed. Estimated total cost £78 (including hostels, meals and petrol contribution).

Pictures of our recent week in Scotland, from the spectacular Aonach Eagach ridge to sunset views from Ratagan.  If possible, let Dave have your digital pictures in advance, or prints or slides to scan; otherwise bring along a CD or memory card/stick on the night.
