Syria & Jordan Talk

John

A slide show of Jordan and Syria, two of the most interesting and contrasting countries in the Middle East. Jordan, ruled by Britain's oldest friends in the Middle East and a country full of spectacular ruins, including the weird and wonderful Petra, centre of the enigmatic Nabateans of whom so much has been written but so little known. Syria, central to the modern Middle East and gradually emerging from decades of isolation, also offers much to see. Slides of ancient Greek cities, Biblical places, Crusader castles, Byzantine churches, thermal springs, the Dead Sea and modern sites.

Scotland Week

Mike

We spend the first four nights at the Glencoe hostel in one of Scotlands most famous and spectacular glens.

There are plenty of Munro-bagging opportunities, including several good routes on the Bidean nam Bian massif, and both Buachaille Etive Beag and Buachaille Etive Mor. For adventurous walkers, the finest mainland scramble in the UK is the Aonach Eagach. This boasts two of Scotland's trickiest Munro hills, Sgor nam Fiannaidh and Meall Dearg, terminating at the Pap of Glencoe. Other points of interest include the cave of Ossian, the cross marking the site of the massacre of 1692, scenic waterfalls in the Pass of Glencoe, and the famous Clachaig Inn.

On Wednesday we move on for three nights at Ratagan hostel on the shore of Loch Duich, with views to the Five Sisters of Kintail. The traverse of the Five Sisters ridge is among the best walks in Scotland. Visits to Eilean Donan Castle and the Isle of Skye are also possible.

On Saturday on the way south, stop at Arnside hostel by Morecambe Bay with views of the Lake District.

Deposit £90 to book your place please.  (Total cost for the week will be around £200).

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
