Wednesday 4th April No Meeting Many of us will be on our way to the Lakes or packing to go – so no meeting this week! Thursday 5th April to Tuesday 10th April Easter in the Lake District Five nights at the St Andrews Youth Centre in Coniston. This provides comfortable and well-equipped hostel-style accommodation in the middle of Coniston village (behind St.Andrew’s Church). The Coniston fells are within easy reach, including the Old Man of Coniston, Wetherlam and Dow Crag. There’s a choice of pubs and teashops in the village, and Coniston Water is a short walk away. You can also visit the Ruskin Museum, and Ruskin’s former home by the lakeside at Brantwood. The Centre has nine dormitories of various sizes, a dining area and kitchen with large catering size oven, two fridges and two freezers. There is a drying room and even a games room and lounge with TV and VCR. Access to the centre is by a small private lane beside St.Andrew’s Church (Grid ref SD303975, see map). There is a payphone which accepts incoming calls on 015394 41531. You need to bring a sleeping bag. Cost will be about £14 per day for meals and bed, plus £30 petrol contribution for those sharing lifts from Chelmsford. Deposit £30 will book your place. Wednesday 11th April Book Review Read all those books you got for Christmas, yet? How about picking a couple of favourites and telling what you liked or hated about them. After all, there’s nothing like a personal recommendation! Wednesday 18th April Committee Meeting We will be trip planning for autumn and organising Wednesday evenings for June. Everybody is welcome at the committee meetings, especially if they bring biscuits. Sunday 22nd April Canal Walk The return of our ever popular 14 mile walk along the Chelmer-Blackwater Navigation. As with last year, we plan to meet at the Heybridge Basin car park (grid ref TL870069) at 10:00am for a car shuffle before walking from Chelmsford back to Heybridge. No guaranteed lunch stop, so please be sure to bring sandwiches. Wednesday 25th April Fun with Maths Join us for an interactive evening playing games with numbers. Don’t worry if you think you’ve forgotten everything you ever learnt about maths – we’ll all be in the same boat. To quote Cress: “Don’t ask me for a fun lesson, maths is always fun”! Sunday 29th April Landart for Rachel Roz Roz is organising an afternoon of Land Art at Bedford’s Park, Havering, in memory of Rachel who died last year. Come along from 2 to 4pm and create works of art from natural materials, inspired by elephants and dolphins; no artistic ability is necessary, just a sense of fun!! And we’ll be collecting money for Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity. Bring cakes and biscuits, cameras to take photos of the landart, and bring any pictures of Rachel you might have. Roz also needs volunteers to help selling tea and cakes. To get to Bedford's, take A12 towards London. At Gallows Corner roundabout turn right towards Havering Atte Bower. At end of road turn right, then first left at traffic lights onto Broxhill Road. At the brow of the hill almost to the water tower turn a sharp left into Bedford's Park. Look for small brown sign on your right. Follow the road down to the visitor centre car park. The visitor centre can be found at the bottom of a curved footpath. TQ 518 923 Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford |
