Wednesday 5th June Writtle Wireless Walk Jonathan We have a local guide to take us on a circular walk around Writtle village highlighting its many connections to the early days of wireless broadcasting and the Marconi Company. The walk will feature the stories behind both the buildings and people that were involved in making this event happen. An event 100 years ago that would change our world and the way that we communicate forever, and it all started in the village of Writtle. The walk takes around 90 minutes and starts at the village sign at the top of the Green opposite the Rose & Crown PH at 7.30pm. A "Chelmsford History Walk" supported by Chelmsford Civic Society. We'll be asking for contributions of £5 per person. Sunday 9th June Walk from South Woodham Ferrers Cress We'll be catching the 8:57am bus from Eve's Corner to South Woodham Ferrers and then walking the 9 miles back. Either meet at the bus stop or in the Danbury Sports Centre car park at 8:45am. Sorry for the early start, but there's not another bus for 2 hours. Please bring sandwiches for your lunch. Wednesday 12th June Committee Meeting Our usual Zoom meeting, looking at events for October and trips next year. Wednesday 19th June Horse & Groom Pub Meal Cress Join us for a splendid pub meal at the Horse and Groom, Roxwell Road, CM1 3RU from about 7:30pm. Let Cress know if you want to come by 12th June, as we will likely need to book a table. Thursday 20th to Sunday 23rd June Claxby in the Lincolnshire Wolds Dave P We'll be staying at The Viking Centre, a former school building in the picturesque village of Claxby in Lincolnshire. Explore the Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, walk on The Viking Way, go to the seaside at Mablethorpe or Skegness, and visit the historic city of Lincoln. The hill behind the centre is on the route of the Viking Way, a long distance footpath running from Rutland Water to the Humber. The views across the Ancholme valley to Lincoln Cathedral and towards the Humber Bridge are outstanding. The cost of the bunkhouse is very reasonable, so we’ve booked for 3 nights in case anyone wants to arrive on Thursday, but it’s fine if you prefer to arrive on Friday – it’s still cheap. Directions: Claxby village is 4 miles north of Market Rasen. From the South, turn right off the A46 for Claxby. Follow this road through the village. The Viking Centre is on the right just after you have leave the village. Address: Pelham Road, Claxby, Lincolnshire LN8 3YR, What3Words ///workflow.bats.alternate You need to bring a sleeping bag. Deposit £35 to book your place. Wednesday 26th June Danbury Common Evening Walk Cress Meet at NT car park near the Cricketers Arms pub in Danbury (CM3 4ED) at 7.30pm for a short walk on Danbury Common followed by a night cap at the pub.
