It’s George’s birthday tomorrow & everyone is welcome to share in the celebrations with a slap up meal at the Pig & Whistle in Chignal Smealy. We meet at 7:30, but let George know if you’re coming to give an idea of numbers.

The pub is on the Chignal Road, NW of Chelmsford (post code CM1 4SZ).

Saturday 8th to Sunday 9th October

The Thames Path

Cress

St Pauls and The Thames

We will be completing a 29 mile walk from The Thames Barrier to Hampton Court, along the banks of the river Thames and staying the Saturday night at YHA Holland Park.  This will be an unsupported walk, ie, YOU WILL NEED TO CARRY ALL YOUR PERSONAL ITEMS IN YOUR RUCKSACK!!  We will have breakfast provided by the Hostel and eat out in London on the Saturday night. Bring your own packed lunches, or buy en route.

The walk is designed by John Vidal who says "Treat it as a hike through foreign lands and do not underestimate its length, its changing topography or the appeal and detail of its distractions. This pathway should be recognised as one of the world's great walks."

Meet at 10:00am on Saturday at North Greenwich Tube station. Walk to either Putney or Hammersmith bridge, getting the tube to Holland Park (get a Travelcard or Oyster card). On Sunday we will be walking from Putney or Hammersmith to Hampton Court, train back takes 35 mins to London Waterloo.

Deposit £26 will book your bed and breakfast.

Wednesday 12th October

Canal Walk

Dave P

Join us for a walk through the heart of Essex, from Chelmsford to Heybridge Basin, along the Blackwater and the Chelmer canals. The walk is approximately 14 miles end-to-end.

We’ll probably stop for tea in the afternoon at Paper Mill lock, and finish with a pint at The Old Ship, but please bring sandwiches for lunch.

Meet at the Heybridge Basin Daisy Meadow car park (grid ref TL870069, see map) at 10:00am (Heybridge Basin is signposted from the B1026 between Heybridge and Goldhanger). We’ll leave most of our cars at Heybridge Basin, and organise lifts to Chelmsford, to walk back to Heybridge.
