Wednesday Meetings, Weekends Away & Other Events

November 2009

Wednesday 4th November

Curry night

Ali

It’s almost my birthday, so to celebrate I thought it would be nice to have a bit of a nosh up. I plan to book a table at the Gulshan restaurant in New Street Chelmsford (just around the corner from the Y), so please let me know by 28th October if you’d like to come. See www.gulshanindia.co.uk if you want to start making your choice from the 241 items on the menu.

Meet at the restaurant at 7.30 to eat at 8pm.

Sunday 8th November

Essex Way (part 5)

Cress

Whether you’ve joined us for all or none of the previous legs of the Essex Way, come for a delightful walk from Great Tey to Great Horkesley (8.4 miles).

In this section, we move in to the Colne Valley, with views of the 32-arch Chappel Railway Viaduct, and we pass a disused church, a former brewery and a nudist camp.

Meet promptly at 10.00am outside The Yew Tree pub, Great Horkesley (on A134, 3 miles N of Colchester, postcode  CO6 4EG, grid ref  TL977304, see map), and we’ll share a lift to Great Tey to start the walk. As usual, please bring sandwiches for lunch.

Wednesday 11th November

Committee meeting

Join us to plan our trips for early summer and events for February & March. Everybody’s welcome.

Wednesday 18th November

Call My Bluff

Ali

A game of cunning, bluff and deceit. Practice that poker face and join us for an evening of definitions and guess work. A small prize will be awarded to the winning team.

YHA Bath

Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd November

Weekend in Bath

Jim

YHA Bath is an Italianate mansion situated just one mile from the centre of the city. Bath is a World Heritage City and famous for its hot springs, Roman Baths and Georgian architecture.

Just a few of the attractions in Bath -  the world famous Roman Baths, the Fashion Museum ('400 years of fashion'), Jane Austen Centre (a shrine to the city's most famous resident), Number 1 Royal Crescent (an immaculate 18th-century townhouse), the Building of Bath Museum ('see the city grow') and Sally Lunn's Refreshment House and Museum (the oldest house in Bath). And there's the Holburne Museum of Art and refurbished Victoria Art Gallery, as well as the fascinating Bath Aqua Theatre of Glass where you can watch hand made glass works of art being created before your very eyes.

And if that’s not enough, there are plenty of opportunities for walking in the peaceful countryside, rolling hills and meandering waterways only a stone's throw from Bath.

Directions: From M4 take Jct 18, follow signs to Bath. At Cleveland Place (London Road) follow signs to University & American Muesum. Hostel is 1.5km up Bathwick Hill on left hand side. Parking is in the road and is free and unrestricted (baggage drop only in hostel grounds).

£30 deposit please. Total cost for the weekend will be around £60.

Wednesday 25th November

Dolomites – the slide show

Mike & Cress

Pics from Mike & Cress’ summer hols in the Val Gardenia area of the Dolomites and northern edge of Lake Garda. See stunning views of the dramatic, snow-sprinkled slopes of the Marmelada glacier and the sun-kissed shores of Lake Garda. Lovely.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
