Wednesday Meetings, Weekends Away & Other Events

November 2004

Wednesday 3rd November

The Green Man, Howe Street

Pub Night

Dave P

Join us for a cosy evening at the Green Man, Howe Street (near Great Waltham). With any luck we will be sharing pictures of the recent Burley trip - hopefully there'll be some corkers!

Leaving Chelmsford towards Great Dunmow on A130, turn left at the last roundabout (signposted Howe St. and Gt. Waltham) - sign board to the Green Man. Pub is on the left after ½ mile (grid ref. TL696148, see map)

Sunday 7th November

Disappearing Villages

George

Join George for this superb walk taking in Mole Hill Green and some of the beautiful Essex countryside targeted for tarmacking under the Stansted Airport expansion proposal. May be quite muddy.

Meet at the Three Horseshoes PH, Molehill Green at 10:30 (you can park in the road nearby). Grid ref TL562246, see map. The walk is a figure-of-eight of 10 miles, with lunch also at the Three Horseshoes. Please let George know by Wednesday if you're going to want lunch.

Wednesday 10th November

Committee Meeting

We will be trip planning for the Spring and organising Wednesday evening activities for January/February. Everybody welcome!

Wednesday 17th November

Badminton

Tom

Not the horse trials, but a chance to get the blood pumping chasing shuttlecocks at the Riverside sports centre in Victoria Rd, Chelmsford (see directions). I don't know of any burgeoning champions in the group, so I'm assuming this will be a light-hearted knock about with a nodding acquaintance to the rules.

Please let Tom know at least two weeks in advance if you're interested, to give him a chance to book the court(s), probably starting at 9pm.

Rodings RallySaturday 20th November

Rodings Rally

Tom

An overnight orienteering event organised by Epping Forest Outdoor Group (formerly Walthamstow & Chingford YHA Group) which involves solving cryptic clues and navigating to checkpoints hidden deep in Epping Forest in the middle of the night. You have 8 hours to do a 12 mile course, usually starting about midnight.

We are looking for teams of 2 to 4; please contact Tom if you are interested. Entry fee is £4, plus £2 if you want breakfast at the finish.

Wednesday 24th November

After the deluge in Dunajec

Pedalling Around Poland

Tom & Jim

Join Tom and Jim for a stunning slide show of their recent cycling trip to Poland. Passing through towering scenery, braving humidity and torrential floods, to bring us pictures of the wondrous natural beauty of the area - no doubt enhanced by all that lycra.

For a quick preview, see some of Jim's photos

Dimmingsdale Hostel

Friday 26th to Sunday 28th November

Dimmingsdale, Staffordshire

Dave P

Our late autumn rent-a-hostel weekend. A traditional, purpose-built hostel in secluded woodland south of the Peak District. Fine views across the Churnet Valley. Walk in Dimmingsdale and alongside the Cauldon Canal. Or why not visit the Pottery Museums at Stoke-on-Trent.

This hostel makes an ideal base for exploring this relatively undiscovered corner of the Staffordshire moorlands.

Deposit £22. Total about £45.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
