Sunday 12th May

Sunday Walk – Tillingham

John W

Meet in the free car park by the playing fields in Tillingham,(CM0 7TW, toilets available), for a 9.45am start. Please bring mid morning snacks, lunch, and plenty of drinks, as there is nowhere on route to get a drink apart from The Star in Steeple at lunchtime.

The walk is approx. 12½ miles and includes views across the bay along with varied walking through fields and woods and along riverbank, in one of the quietest and more remote areas of Essex. We should be back at cars at about 4pm.

Wednesday 15th May

Transport of New Zealand.

John M

John will give a slideshow on the railways and shipping of New Zealand from the days of settlement to the present. The topic on how transport developed in such an isolated Dominion is a fascinating subject. It includes the military and civil imperatives for transport set by Great Britain for the colony in the earlier decades of the 19th Century, the demands made by the gold rush for effective and rapid transport in the 1880s, and the requirements born from the post-WW2 economic and population boom. We will also look at the current difficulties of funding and sustaining an integrated infrastructure of railways, buses and ferries in a sparsely-populated country with a challenging topography of mountains, rivers and glaciers.
