The Bailey Gate, Castle Acre

Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th August

Old Red Lion, Castle Acre

Jim

Join us for a weekend cycling and walking in Norfolk. We are staying in the The Old Red Lion hostel, a 17th Century former pub in the Norman walled village of Castle Acre near Swaffham. This beautiful historic village has the remains of a castle and a priory as well as a choice of pubs and tearooms. Nearby is the moated manor house Oxburgh Hall, and the coast is about 20 miles away. Castle Acre is on both the Peddar's and Nar Valley Way. Great for walkers and cyclists.

Castle Acre is 3¼ miles north of Swaffham. The Old Red Lion is on the left 75 yards down Bailey Street (go under Norman Arch in village centre, grid ref TF818151, see map). The price includes wholefood vegetarian breakfast, and all bedding and linen are provided. There are a couple of twin rooms and a double available, as well as dorm beds.

Deposit of £45 will book a dorm bed, or £55 per person in a twin room.

Tyncornel Hostel Dolgoch Hostel

Friday 23rd to Monday 26th August

Elenydd Wilderness

Dave P

A chance to get away from it all visiting two of the UK's most remote hostels, the Elenydd Wilderness Hostels. We'll stay Friday and Saturday nights at Tyncornel hostel and Sunday at Dolgoch hostel, with the option of walking between hostels. Walking routes between 5 and 10 miles each day.

On Friday evening we drive to Tyncornel hostel, on Saturday we'll walk do a circular walk from Tyncornel hostel, and on Sunday walk from Tyncornel to Dolgoch hostel. On Monday we return to our cars at Tyncornel.

This part of mid-Wales, east of the small town of Tregaron, located in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, is a vast upland area known as the Elenydd. This is an airy plateau cut by gentle, sometimes lush, valleys. It is an area with no major roads, and with no towns or villages, just the occasional isolated farmhouse. Here sheep munch at grass, the trees quietly grow, and the majestic red kite swoops and soars over the land.

The hostels are simple and remote with a distinctive character and charm.

Deposit of £50 will book a bed.
