29th April to 2nd May 2016 Steps Bridge, Dartmoor Doug May Bank Holiday weekend at Blytheswood Hostel (formerly YHA Steps Bridge) in Devon. We have exclusive use of this cosy wooden chalet overlooking the Teign Valley in secluded woodland on the eastern edge of Dartmoor. Ideal for walking on the rugged Dartmoor Tors as well as enjoying picnics in meadows by the river, wandering through thatched villages and sampling Devon cream teas. Local attractions include Dunsford Nature Reserve, Castle Drogo and Canonteign Falls. The cathedral city of Exeter is 8 miles away and the beaches of South Devon are just a 40 minute drive. Directions: The hostel is on the B3212, near Steps Bridge, Dunsford, between Exeter and Moretonhampstead. Look out for the brown Youth Hostel sign. There is a public car park opposite the driveway. Park in there, cross the road and walk up the hill to the hostel. Postcode EX6 7EQ. Duvets, pillows, and linen are all provided. Deposit £39 please (total will be around £82 including petrol and food). Wednesday 4th May Pub walk – The Crown Dave P Meet at The Crown in Sandon at 7:30pm for a short walk, returning to the pub for a drink around 9pm. Sandon is about 3 miles south east of Chelmsford, near the A12 bypass, signposted from A1060 Maldon Rd (former A414). The Crown is in the centre of the village, near the Church (grid ref TL744048, postcode CM2 7SH). Wednesday 11th May Committee Meeting Planning events for August and trips for the Winter. Please join us at The Crown, Sandon. Sunday 15th May St Albans & Ver Valley Walk Mike & Cress Explore the rolling hills of the Ver valley and the remains of a Roman city. Meet at the Verulamium car park in St Albans (AL3 4SW) at 10:30am for a walk of about 10½ miles. Please bring sandwiches, but there should be time after the walk for a cup of tea and possibly a visit to the museum. Wednesday 18th May Pub Meal – The White Hart Cress Meet at the White Hart, Margaretting Tye, CM4 9JX at 7:30pm for a lovely pub meal. Let Cress know if you want to come by Wed 11 May. Wednesday 25th May French Night Cress With our forthcoming French trip, what better time to don a beret, crack open the Beaujolais and practice a few choice phrases.
