Sunday 1st March

The Essex Way – Leg 1, take 2

Did you miss the walk last October when the group did the first leg of the Essex Way? If you'd like to catch up before we do the second leg (planned for 29th March), now's your chance. This section is from Epping to Willingale (about 11 ½ miles).

Meet in Willingale between the two churches in the main road at 10am. Willingdale is about 7 miles west of Chelmsford, between Roxwell and Fyfield (grid ref TL596074, see map). We’ll then take a few cars to Epping to start the walk. Although there is a pub at Chipping Ongar, we won’t get there till after lunch, so please bring sandwiches.

Highlights include Greensted Church, Ongar castle, Willingale Airfield and the two Willingale churches.

The Seven Sisters

Frog Firle hostel is a Sussex flint house, partly dating from 1530 with a Tudor beamed lounge, is just a mile from the picturesque village of Alfriston. Norman and medieval sites are within easy reach, as is the Seven Sisters spectacular sea cliffs. Set in a large garden overlooking the Cuckmere Valley, the hostel is an ideal base for exploring the South Downs where there are plenty of footpaths and bridleways to explore.

Deposit £28 required to book your place please. Total cost of the weekend will be about £45  (There are also some 2-bed rooms available for couples at an extra £3 per person per night).

Chelmsford Theatre Workshop does Blackadder

Lord Edmund Blackadder, accompanied by a dungball in a dress and a dimwit he can't seem to shake off, falls in love with a boy, sets sail with a legless Captain and talks himself out of an inheritance wearing a fake pair of boobs.

The production starts in the Old Court Theatre at 7:45pm and you can get tickets by phone or in person in advance from the Civic Theatre Box office on 01245 606505, book online, or in person from the Old Court Theatre from 7pm. The Old Court Theatre is in Springfield Road, Chelmsford, opposite the prison.

Tickets cost £8.

Join us for a night out at the Spice Indian restaurant in Duke Street, Chelmsford. We’re planning to eat from about 7:30pm, but let Helen know by 11 March if you’ll be joining us as we’ll need to book a table.

Kerala slides

James & Marion

Kerala is a fabulously scenic part of India and James and Marion are keen to share the experience of their visit there with the group. Watch out it could be another place on your "must see" list!



Sunday 29th March

Essex Way part 2

The next leg of the Essex Way is 10.6 miles from Willingale to Great Waltham. Meet in the village car park, Gt Waltham (in South Street, just off Chelmsford Road not far from the Beehive pub, see map) at 10am. We will car shuffle to Willingale then the route takes us back through Shellow Bowels, Good Easter and Pleshey, returning to Gt Waltham. There is a pub en route, but please bring sandwiches for lunch.

Please note that the clocks change this weekend, so make sure you have the right time!


Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
