A Week in France

Our Whitsun week trip will be to the Cévennes National Park in the south of France. We’ve booked Le Ranc des Avelacs, a hamlet facing Mont Aigoual and overlooking the Cévennes valleys. Seven bedrooms, sunny terraces, swimming pool. Travel by Eurostar to Avignon. More details from Cressida.

Total cost will be around than £500 per person, including accommodation, train, car hire and food.

Nasty Bike Ride

A ride west from Stansted Mountfitchet to the attractive town of Buntingford, taking in picturesque Hertfordshire villages including Much Hadham, Furneux Pelham, Westmill and Nasty (much nicer than it sounds!). About 32 miles on quiet lanes with no major climbs.

Meet at 10.30am in the public car park in Stansted Mountfitchet (behind the library in Crafton Green, off B1051, close to junction with B1383, CM24 8AQ, TL510250, see map). Plenty of pubs and cafés for refreshments along the route.

Race Night – Chelmsford Racecourse

An evening at the races. Chelmsford City Racecourse is situated in Great Leighs, 5 miles north of Chelmsford on the A131. www.chelmsfordcityracecourse.com

Gates open at 5pm, so plenty of time for a midsummer picnic. There are seven races (first one at 6.40, last at 9.10), a sports bar with viewing gallery and food available on site.

Entry is £15 if you book on line in advance, or £17 on the gate. Please let Chris know if you’re coming.

Sunday 19^th June

Canal Walk

Our annual 14 mile hike down the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation. The plan is to drive to Maldon, catch the 9:37am bus to Chelmsford, and then walk back to Maldon. Chelmsfordians may wish to try for a lift home, but buses run every 2 hours throughout the day. Parking just off the High Street in White Horse Lane (CM9 5QP) is free on Sundays. Our bus stop is just outside the White Horse pub and the bus leaves at 9:37am, arriving in Chelmsford 10:14am.

Pub walk - Writtle

Meet in the Writtle village car park at 7:30pm for a short walk before adjourning to the Wheatsheaf about 9pm. The car park is by the Green (close to the duck pond, grid ref TL678062, see map)

Wednesday 29^th June

Evening bike ride – Stock & Hanningfield

Meet in the Stock village hall car park (the turning is opposite the Bakers Arms and Greenwood Spa) at 7:30pm for a beautiful summer’s ride round the reservoir. Drinks at the Hoop around 9pm.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
