Late May Bank Holiday Week: Scotland Trip

Jim

This year's Scotland trip is to Inveraray, Argyll, at the top of Loch Fyne, and Minnigaff, Newton Stewart in Dumfries & Galloway.

Inveraray Around Inveraray is Loch Awe, the Kintyre peninsula, miles of coast, and the Munro (Benn Bhuidhe). The town sits on the shore of Loch Fyne - a large sea loch famous for its kippers.

The islands of Islay, Jura, Gigha and Arran are accessible from here.

Minnigaff Minnigaff is in the Southern Uplands, and near the Glentrool Forest, the Galloway Hills, and the Mull of Galloway.

There are Corbetts in both areas. Both hostels are in small towns, so we can go to the bright lights (!) in the evenings. The journeys should be somewhat less arduous than some previous Scotland trips: 500 miles to Inverary, and 400 to Newton Stewart from Chelmsford.

Total cost will be about £170. £90 deposit to book your place please.

The White Horse

Wednesday 1st June

The White Horse

Dave J

Anyone not with the gang in Scotland is welcome to join Dave for a drink down the White Horse in Townfield Street, Chelmsford (grid ref TL 705072, see map; close to the railway station - park in Glebe Road car park). Meet from 8:30pm.

Wednesday 8th June

The Claw of the Bear

John

John will be giving a slide show of his tour of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, all countries of the Caucasus. This mountainous region between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea is a fascinating patchwork of different cultures, nations and religions. For centuries it has been the source of legends and myths - Jason sailed here to find the Golden Fleece. More recently it was the Tsar's corridor to Asia and thus "The Claw of the Bear" to the Monarchs of Persia. Today Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are independent countries again and are struggling to find their path in the world - a path that continues to be far from easy.

Sunday 12th June

Epping to Ongar Walk

Jim

Ride on the restored Ongar to Epping railway, and then walk back from Epping to Ongar along the Essex Way, a distance of about 8 miles. The former tube line from Ongar to North Weald is now run by volunteers and provides a Sunday service using a 1960's multiple unit. A '60s bus then connects to Epping town centre. The Essex way then leads back out of Epping Forest via Greenstead log church to Ongar.

Meet at Budworth hall car park in Ongar at 10:30 as the train leaves at 11am, and we get to Epping at midday. Bring sandwiches for lunch; we could go in a tea shop or pub when we get back to Ongar. Those with children could meet us for the train ride, and then maybe ride back on the train too.

Wednesday 15th June

Committee Meeting

We will be trip planning for late Summer, organising Wednesday activities for August. Everybody welcome!

Maldon

Wednesday 22nd June

Evening Walk at Maldon

Jim

It's pretty close to the longest day, so why not celebrate with a stroll by the seaside in the glorious evening sunshine.

4 or 5 miles along the sea-wall at Heybridge with views across the Blackwater estuary to Maldon with its historic Thames Barges, returning along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.

Meet at the Heybridge Basin car park (same as for the canal walk, grid ref TL870069, see map) at 7:30pm. We'll be in the Old Ship pub, at Heybridge Basin, afterwards.

Friday 24 June

Twenty20 Cricket

Dave J

Cricket match at Chelmsford Cricket Ground between Essex Eagles and Kent Spitfires. This is a '20/20' match which is a new format to the game designed to attract younger people (such as ourselves!) to our national summer sport.

The game consists of 20 overs a side and starts at 7.30pm and will last for about 3 hours. It will be under floodlights with the players in coloured kit and a white ball is used. And each player has his own snappy pop tune which is played when he comes into bat!.

It will be loud and colourful and fast and furious with loads of action and a great atmosphere - And the bar will be open!

The cost is £13. I think you will be able to buy tickets on the day but they are on sale in advance (phone 01245 254010 or visit www.essexcricket.org.uk) - it is possible they might have been sold by the day of the match!
