Wednesday Meetings, Weekends Away & Other Events

July 2008

Wednesday 2nd July

Activity Night

Jon Wentworth

A chance to try archery, shooting or climbing at the Belchamps Scout activity centre in Hockley (note change of venue). Please contact Jonathan if you’re interested. The cost will be no more than £5 each. The centre is in Holyoak Lane (signposted from the main road in Hockley), and we’ll be there from 7.30pm.

Littlehampton Hostel

Friday 4th to Sunday 6th July

Littlehampton, West Sussex

Jim

YHA Littlehampton is a modern hostel on the bank of the River Arun at Fisherman’s Wharf (follow signs to "Look and Sea Visitor Centre").  Just minutes from the beach, it is a great base to explore the south coast.

Enjoy a stroll along the seafront or head inland along the riverside for a walk to Arundel and the South Downs. Or there are harbour cruises, river boat trips, sandy beaches, and amusement parks. And don’t miss a visit to the eye-catching architecturally-controversial East Beach Café.

Deposit £32 will book your bed. Total cost about £50.

Hylands Park

Wednesday 9th July

Wildlife Guided Walk in Hylands Park

Dave P

Join Tony Walentowicz, the Keeper of Natural Sciences from Chelmsford Museum, for a walk and talk on the parklands of Hylands House. Use the Writtle bypass entrance to Hylands Park, and meet at the far left end of the car park at 7:30pm.  The walk lasts 1½ to 2 hours.

This event had been postponed until 6th August due to poor weather

Monday 14th to Sunday 27th July

French Alps

Nigel / Brigitte

Brigitte has proposed a trip to stay at her parents’ cottage at Saint-Firmin in the Valgaudemar valley between Gap and Grenoble, on the edge of the 'Parc National des Ecrins', not far from the Champsaur Valley and the Devoluy valley.  The cottage can accommodate up to 10 people.  We can do several day walks in the mountains, and there is also the possibility of longer excursions staying at mountain huts.

Cost would be around £70 for flight, plus perhaps £100 towards car hire and other transport costs, and a contribution for food, electricity etc. at the cottage. There is a choice of going on Monday 14th and staying for 2 weeks or Monday 21st for 1 week. Please let Nigel know if you’d like to come - he can give you flight details so you can book your own ticket.
