We will start the walk with a visit to Pleshey Castle "a fine surviving example of Norman motte-and-bailey castle earthworks dating from the 12th Century, now about 15 meters high, one of the largest mottes in England. The motte and bailey are connected by a great brick bridge, built in the late 14th or early 15th centuries, and one of the earliest brick structures in the county. " The castle is privately owned, and we have an appointment to visit at 7.30pm, so you need to arrive promptly. There is a charge of £2 per head for the visit. Park by the Leather Bottle pub, or in the street near the turning to the castle (about 200yds beyond (west of) the pub a private road called Pump Lane leads to the castle entrance). If you're late, or don't want to visit the castle, you can meet us outside the castle entrance for the rest of the walk. Wednesday 26th July Pub Quiz John S Not a quiz in a pub, but a quiz about pubs. John has selflessly dedicated many hours studying this subject so we can benefit from his research . Friday 28th July to Sunday 30th July Castle Hedingham A weekend cycling on quiet lanes, through pleasant villages, in rural Essex. Could be our last chance to stay at Castle Hedingham hostel, a 16th Century house in this quiet and picturesque village with many timber-framed medieval buildings. The nearby castle has the best preserved Norman keep in England. (Even if you’re not a cyclist, there are likely to be a few people coming to walk and sight-see). Deposit of £22 will book your bed. Total cost for the weekend will be about £36. Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford |
