Wednesday Meetings, Weekends Away & Other Events

July 2005

1st to 3rd July

Badby Hostel

Dave P

YHA Badby

This cosy 17th century thatched cottage is on the church green in the unspoilt village of Badby in rural Northamptonshire. It has a large garden and orchard. Sweeping landscape surrounds the hostel where picturesque villages and a network of quiet lanes and footpaths are ideal for walking.

An ideal location for a summer weekend away from the crowds, and less than 100 miles from Chelmsford. We'll probably have a barbecue in the hostel garden on the Saturday evening.

Sadly, YHA are planning to close Badby hostel soon, so this will probably be your last chance to stay at the only thatched Youth Hostel in England and Wales.

A deposit of £22 will book your bed. Total cost about £39.

Wednesday 6th July

Hylands Picnic

Marion

Meet in the car park (Writtle side) at Hylands from 7:30pm for an evening picnic in the grounds, watching the sun go down. Please make a note of mobile numbers, just in case you miss us in the car park (it's a big place).

Hylands is locked up at sunset, so we fully intend to be ensconced in the Inn on the Green by 9:30pm (this is also Plan B if the weather is less than kind).

Wednesday 13th July

Thorndon Park - evening walk

Cressida

Meet in Herongate, on the green by the village sign, for a stroll of 4 or 5 miles in Thorndon Park, followed by a drink at one of the Herongate pubs.

Herongate is on the A128 south of Brentwood, see map.

Saturday 16th July

Glowworm spotting

Ali

The plan is to meet at the Prince of Wales pub, Woodham Rd, Stow Maries, CM3 6SA for some fortifying nosh, before venturing round the corner to the nature reserve at Stow Maries Halt (grid ref TQ835 991, see map) at about 10pm to see if we can spot any of these rare insects. There are no guarantees, we might spend the night wandering around in the dark with nothing to show for it. Bring plenty of warm clothing, a torch and something to kneel on. Let me know if you want to come by 9th July and I'll book a table in the pub.

Wednesday 20th July

Committee Meeting

We will be trip planning for autumn, organising Wednesday evening activities for September. Everybody welcome!

Sunday 24th July

Audley End

Audley End & Wendens Ambo Walk

Tom

Dr Tom is hosting a splendid walk taking in the best that north Essex has to offer. Start at 10:30 in the Common car park, Saffron Walden (see map), close to the historic turf maze. Stroll out of the town into the Capability Brown landscaped Audley Park and past its spectacular Jacobean mansion. Pass through rolling chalk hills to Wendens Ambo and its splendid pubs, returning to Saffron Walden with the opportunity for additional refreshment.

Please bring sandwiches and let Tom know if you want to come.

Wednesday 27th July

The Viper pub

Viper - cycle ride

Jim

Celebrate the summer with a cycle out into the sticks for a refreshing pint at one of our favourite pubs. A modest distance at a modest pace, but bring lights for the ride home. This delightful country pub can be found on the road between Mill Green and Highwood, grid ref TL640019, see map.

Meet 7:30pm outside the YMCA in Chelmsford.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
