New Member’s Pub Night

Meeting at The Orange Tree pub from 8:30pm, the idea is to welcome any new members attracted by our posters and newspaper ads. And of course there’s always the real ales to sample.

Sunday 16th January

Langdon Hills and Plotlands walk

Come with Jim for a surprisingly scenic walk around Langdon Hills, taking in views across the Thames to Kent, and the Dunton Plotlands Nature Reserve. At 2pm we have a guided tour of The Haven Plotlands museum, the last remaining bungalow out of hundreds which once stood on the reserve, it gives a glimpse into the life of Londeners who purchased plots of land in the country in the 1930s. (£2 donation per person for Essex Wildlife Trust).

Meet at Westley Heights car park at 10:30am (coming South towards Horndon on the Hill from Laindon on the B1007, go up the hill and turn left immediately after The Crown, a Harvester pub. Grid ref TQ681868, see map).

Air Rifle Shooting and Crate Stacking

See whether you have what it takes to become a top marksman, or just have a bit of fun trying to hit the target. Also a chance to try the Crate Stacking activity - balancing yourself on a tower of milk crates - you are roped up, so build as high as you dare. All at the at the Belchamps Scout activity centre in Hockley. Please contact Jonathan if you’re interested. The cost will around £5 each. The centre is in Holyoak Lane (signposted from the main road in Hockley), and we’ll be there from about 8pm.

Film: The Illusionist

The Cramphorn Theatre in Chelmsford is showing an animated film, The Illusionist, at 8pm.

By the same makers as the very successful Belleville Rendezvous and featuring a script by the great Jacques Tati, the story is that of an unsuccessful conjuror and an unlikely friendship he strikes up on a train trip to Edinburgh.

We have reserved some tickets, so cash to Dave P if you want to come. Cost £5.

The Cramphorn Theatre is in Fairfield Road (by the bus station). Use Fairfield Road car park, accessed via Coval Lane.



Approach to Canterbury Cathedral

Friday 28th to Sunday 30th January 2011

We’re staying at Kipps Hostel, an independent hostel in Canterbury. It is a short walk to the town centre and the historic attractions including the renowned Canterbury Cathedral. Canterbury also makes an ideal base for day trips to Dover and Leeds Castle, and walks on the Kent coast.

Directions: Take B2068 to Hythe from City Ring Road (A28). Turn right at first traffic lights by church. KiPPS is 300 yds on left (40 Nunnery Fields, CT1 3JT).

Deposit £33 please. Total cost of the weekend will be about £53.


Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
