Wetherdown Hostel

Wetherdown, East Meon, Hampshire

Jim

Wetherdown Lodge is a comfortable and relatively modern independent hostel in a former naval base on the South Downs, just a few steps from the South Downs National Trail, three miles south of the picturesque village of East Meon.

You can walk to Old Winchester Hill with its Iron Age fort in one direction, or to Butser Hill (highest point on the South Downs) in the other direction.

There's also the possibility of sightseeing trips around Portsmouth, perhaps a visit to the Historic Dockyard, the Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower at Gosport, the Royal Arouries at Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill, or the impressive Porchester Castle.

Most rooms are small 3 bedded rooms, and there some twin rooms too.

The hostel is at the Sustainability Centre, Droxford Road, East Meon, GU32 1HR. Take A3 from London/Petersfield; shortly after Queen Elizabeth Country Park, take a left turn - sign posted Clanfield. The road then doubles back under the A3. At the Rising Sun Pub turn right (there is a brown sign signposted The Sustainabilitiy Centre). Follow the road for about 2 miles - the last mile is up hill through woods. At the top of the hill  turn left by a cottage onto the Droxford Road. Continue for about 400 yds and the Centre is on the left  Grid Ref SU 676 189, see map.

Deposit of £46 will book you bed and breakfast (total cost expected to be about £68).

Wednesday 8th February

Theatre: Man & Boy

Ali

Chelmsford Theatre Workshop is staging Man and Boy by Terence Rattigan at the The Old Court Theatre. Man and Boy is a study of a ruthless, sociopathic businessman: his inability to love and the impact of this on others (notably, his son and his wife). The central character was loosely based on the lives of two well known business moguls of the thirties, but today’s audiences may notice the character’s resemblance to Robert Maxwell.

Tickets cost £8 and are available either from the Civic Theatre box office, or on the door. The Old Court Theatre is located on Springfield Road, just opposite the prison. Performance starts 7.45pm.
