Friday 6th to Sunday 8th February

Eastbourne and the South Downs

Dave J

Eastbourne hostel is an old golf clubhouse at the start of the South Downs Way with beautiful views across the seaside resort of Eastbourne and Pevensey Bay. Visits to Brighton, Hastings and Battle are also possible.

We're renting the whole hostel, and there are some 4-bed rooms available that would be suitable for families.

In the neighbourhood are the Seven Sisters Country Park, the dramatic coastline at Beachy Head, Pevensey Castle and Eastbourne Butterfly Farm.

Change of Plan: Unfortunately, YHA Eastbourne was severely damaged by fire on 28th January and will be closed for some time. Our booking for this weekend has been transferred to Brighton hostel.

Deposit £20 to book your bed. Total cost about £35.

Wednesday 11th February

Committee Meeting

Gossip and trip planning for the coming spring, including exciting Wednesday evening activities for April. Everybody is welcome.

Wednesday 18th February

The Jewels in the Atlantic

John

John will be giving us an illustrated talk on the wonders of the Azores. Described by Mark Twain as "the best-kept secret of the Atlantic", these beautiful islands are the most westerly in Europe, and thought by some to be part of the sunken continent of Atlantis. It should be a fascinating evening.

Sunday 22nd February

Shotley Penninsular walk

George

Get some bracing sea air to chase off those winter blues. Join George for a 4 to 6 mile walk starting from Shotley Marina at 11am. Allow 1 hour from Chelmsford.

Shotley is situated at the mouth of the rivers Stour and Orwell about 7 miles south west of Ipswich. From Shotley Point there are views looking south across the Stour to Harwich, east across the Orwell to Felixstowe and southeast down Harwich Harbour to the sea.

Lunch will be at the Shipwreck pub at Shotley Marina at about 1pm. Please let George know if you're planning to come (yes, he has a phone now!!).

Follow the B1456 from Ipswich through the village of Shotley to its end at the waterfront; turn left to the marina; car park at the marina, on the right at sea wall facing Felixstowe, grid ref TM253339, see map.

Wednesday 25th February

Book Review

Dave J

Remember those lovely books you got for Christmas? Well now's the time to share them with your friends. Bring along your favourite (or even your least favourite) books and tell us all about them. Sometimes the best recommendation is word of mouth!

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
