Wednesday Meetings, Weekends Away & Other Events

December 2005

Wednesday 7th December

Pub Night

Jim

Chase those winter blues away with beer and good company at The Bakers Arms, Common Road, Stock (see map). We will be propping up the bar from 8:30pm.

Friday 9th to Monday 12th December

Weekend in Germany

Helen

Geli has invited us for a weekend at her new home near Frankfurt. This a chance to experience the splendid Christmas Fairs at Bad Homburg and Frankfurt! Plenty of good food and Gluhwein, wooden toys and trinkets to solve all your "what-shall-I-get-them-for-Christmas-this-year?" problems. At the same time Bad Homburg offers plenty of thermal spas to pamper yourself in once you are worn out by shopping.

Helen has booked flights on Ryanair (Friday: dep 1055 Stansted to Frankfurt Hahn; Monday: dep 1815 Frankfurt Hahn to Stansted).

Friday night at Frankfurt hostel; Saturday and Sunday at Bad Homburg hostel. Hostel beds are €20 per night, bus from airport is €12, flights were £53 and rising. If anyone else wants to join us, please contact Helen for further details.

Germany here we come!

Sunday 11th December

Fuller Street Walk

Cressida

Meet at The Square and Compasses, Fuller Street (Grid ref TL748161, see map) at 10:30 for a 5 mile winters walk, followed by a tasty lunch. Let Cressida know if you're coming by 7th December, as she needs to confirm the booking at the pub.

Wednesday 14th December

Committee Meeting

We will be trip planning for the Spring and organising Wednesday evening activities for February.

Saturday 17th December

Christmas Dinner

Helen

Our annual Christmas feast at Chignall St. James Village Hall (3 miles from Chelmsford). The tables will be groaning with all the turkeys, crisply roasted spuds and succulent veg you'd expect, along with George's Polish specialities of beetroot borsch and fish & sauerkraut. Best to start those stomach stretching exercises now.

Due to the high price of turkeys the cost this year has had to go up to £8, but it's still an absolute bargain for 5 mouth watering courses. However, this does require the aid of willing helpers to assist with the shopping, peeling & roasting. Please contact Helen to volunteer.

To find it (grid ref TL665108, see map), take the A1060 (Rainsford Rd./Roxwell Rd.) out of Chelmsford; turn right at lights into Chignall Rd., after 1 mile turn left (Mashbury Rd) signposted Chignall St. James. Hall is on the left after almost 2 miles.

Be there for 7.30pm. Bring your own drinks.

Please note that due to the size of the venue numbers are strictly capped at 50 (unless you're prepared to eat from newspaper in the car park). £8 to Dave P will guarantee your place; please say if you want the vegetarian option.

Wednesday 21st December

Photo Competition

Dave J

If you can still move after Saturday's dinner, drag yourself down to the Y for an evening looking over images of the year's events. We traditionally operate 4 categories: Best Portrait, Best Landscape, Best Caption and Spirit of YHA.

The only rule is that the picture must be of a CYHA event that has taken place since 1st Nov 2004. All formats are acceptable, although for viewing purposes it's preferred if digital and slide images are printed.

(For inspiration, see last year's winners!)

28th December 2005 to 2nd January 2006

Glenbrook Centre

New Year Trip to the Peak District

Jim

We are staying at Glenbrook Outdoor Activities Centre, which is between the villages of Hope and Hathersage in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District. An excellent base for walking and exploring the Peaks, easily accessible by road or rail, and close enough for nights out in Sheffield.

We have booked the 'Derwent' building which we last used for our millennium trip. This modern, purpose-built accommodation has a large hall, comfortable dormitories, well-equipped kitchen, showers and full central heating.

Bedding: Pillows and blankets are provided, but you need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow case.

How to get there: Glenbrook is on the north side of the A6187 (formerly A625) Hathersage to Castleton road, between the Rising Sun Hotel and the Travellers Rest. OS map sheet 110 grid ref SK191828, see map. You can also get there by train - both Bamford and Hope stations are 1½ miles away.

We are staying in the building called "Derwent" (turn right in front the main Glenbrook House, Derwent is the huge tent-shaped building). Parking by the house is limited, so leave your car in the car park at the bottom of the drive.

Telephone number: If you need to contact us, try Jim's mobile, or the payphone at Derwent: 01433 651973 (or in emergency contact the warden Mrs Allardyce on 01433 651567)

A deposit of £30 will book your place. The cost will be about £13 per night for bed and meal, plus about £20 petrol contribution for those sharing lifts from the Chelmsford area. So the total if you stay all 5 nights will be around £85.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
