Hatfield Forest Walk

Dave P

George has volunteered to guide us on a winter ramble of about 6 miles through the old deer park of Hatfield Forest. Meet at 10.30 am at the forest car park (¾ mile south of the A120 at Takeley Street, grid ref TL546203, see map). Lunch will be at the Hop Poles Inn, Bedlar's Green. Please contact Dave P if you wish to have a pub lunch.

Wednesday 11th December

Committee Meeting

Feel free to come along and join us. We will be discussing Wednesday nights for February and weekends away in Spring and Summer. All suggestions welcome.

Saturday 14th December

Christmas Meal and Party

Our traditional pre-Christmas feast and festivities at the usual venue of Chignall St. James Village Hall at 8pm.

Two enormous turkeys, with a mountain of crisply roasted spuds and succulent veg, all for just £6! And that includes a choice of starters, and generous quantities of Christmas pudding and mince pies. How do we do it? The answer is by getting loads of volunteers to peel, chop, boil and roast. All members and guests welcome, but please pay by 8th December so we know how much food to buy. And say if you want a vegetarian option. Bring your own drinks. To find it (grid ref TL665108, see map), take the A1060 (Rainsford Rd./Roxwell Rd.) out of Chelmsford; turn right at lights into Chignall Rd., after 1 mile turn left (Mashbury Rd) signposted Chignall St. James. Hall is on the left after almost 2 miles. Volunteers to help, please contact Helen. To book send £6 to Dave P.

Wednesday 18th December

Photo Competition

Ali

The return of our traditional photo competition. This year there are 4 categories: Best Portrait, Best Landscape, Best Caption and Spirit of YHA.

Our only rules are that the picture must be of a CYHA event that has taken place since 1st November 2001.

New Year at Castleton in the Peak District

Peak District National Park

DaveP

New Year at The Hollowford Centre just outside the picturesque village of Castleton in the heart of the Peak District National Park. We have booked 5 nights at the self-contained "Stanage" self-catering unit in the grounds of this well-situated training centre. The unit has bunk beds, kitchen, dining room, lounge, drying area, full heating and showers. All bedding is provided.

As well as offering fine walking in the surrounding hills, Castleton has caves, cafés, pubs, tea shops and Peveril Castle.

Head west on A6187 (formerly A625) to Castleton, drive past the Cheshire Cheese and Peak Hotel on your left. At the Post Office on your right, the main road bends sharp left. STOP on the bend and take the lane off to the right. The centre is ½ mile at the end of the lane (grid ref SK147836, see map). Keep right on the site, there is parking on the right, and the entrance to Stanage will be on your left beyond the main building. If you need to contact us there, the payphone number is 01433 621416.

Cost will be about £14 per night for bed and meals, plus about £16 petrol money for those sharing lifts from Chelmsford. £20 deposit will book your place.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
