Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th August Hunstanton, Norfolk Coast Jim A weekend cycling and walking on the Norfolk coast. Located only 2 minutes walk from the town centre and seafront, YHA Hunstanton is a pair of Victorian townhouses built of warm red Norfolk carrstone. There are plenty of local cycling routes, and bike hire is available locally if you don't want to bring your own bike. Or if you prefer to walk, the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Footpath are nearby. 'Sunny Hunny' is the only east coast resort in Britain which faces west. The town was development in the nineteenth century as a purpose built coastal holiday village. Hunstanton has a friendly atmosphere and is best known for its large sandy beaches, beautiful sunsets and unique red and white striped cliffs. Much of the surrounding North and West Norfolk coastline is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a peaceful area, home to many nature reserves and charming villages, churches and historic sites. Directions: From coast road (A149) turn into Sandringham Road, then take third left into Avenue Road. Hostel on right (20 metres) Deposit £42 will book your bed for the weekend. Total cost will be about £66. Wednesday 7th August Pub Walk – Mill Green Dave J Meet at The Cricketers, Mill Green, CM4 0DJ (GR 639012, see map) at 7:30pm for a 3½ mile walk through Fryerning and Mill Green, returning to the pub about 9ish for refreshments. Sunday 11th August St Peter’s Way part 4 Jim Meet 10am at the parking for St. Peter-on-the-Wall church Bradwell-on-sea, Grid TM 022 078 (See map). Then car shuttle back to Maylandsea to pick where we left off. The walk is 21km (13 miles) starting at Maylandsea marina and walking along the sea wall with views over the Blackwater estuary, then heading inland via the villages of Steeple and Tillingham before crossing the salt marshes at the end of the Dengie Peninsula to approach the 1200 year old Saxon St Peter's Church along the sea wall. I hope to include a pub stop at Tillingham 2/3 of the way, but please bring sandwiches for lunch. Wednesday 14th August Committee Meeting We’ll be planning Wednesdays for November and trips away for spring. Sunday 18th August Jim’s BBQ Jim It’s August, so the weather is bound to be perfect for a barbecue. Meet at Jim’s house from 2pm. Please bring things to barbecue and drink. and possibly something to sit on. Jim’s doing bread, salads and burning hot coals. Wednesday 21st August Evening Cycle Ride – The Flitch Way Dave P Meet outside the Flitch of Bacon pub in Little Dunmow (CM6 3HT) at 7:30pm for a delightful ride along lanes to Rayne, returning via the Flitch Way cycle path, to finish with a swift drink in the Flitch o’ Bacon. Bring lights for your bike. Friday 23rd to Monday 26th August Snowdonia August Bank Holiday weekend in North Wales, staying at Glan Dwr Mountain Lodge in Capel Curig. "Idyllic setting with fantastic walking from the doorstep". The lodge is a comfortable and well-equipped house with bunkrooms, well-fitted open-plan kitchen and living room with waterfall views. There’s a café next door, a pub close by, and direct access to some of the best mountain scenery in Britain. Deposit £45 to book your bed for the three nights. Wednesday 28th August Slide Show – Picos d’Europa Jim Join Jim for an evening taking in the spectacular peaks and gorges of northern Spain.
