Wednesday 29th August The Lakeland Poets John M John will give a slideshow and talk on the poets of the Lake District. William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Southey with others made up the group now known as the Lake Poets, who made the Lake District popular and started the wave of tourism and sightseeing, which continues to this day. They were pioneers of the English branch of the Romantic movement and left a legacy of love for Natural England. Less well known is their radicalism, which was a cause for concern to the government which sent spies to the Lakes to watch their moves. Come along for things about the poets which don’t get into the tourist brochures. Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford |
