Wednesday Meetings, Weekends Away & Other Events

August 2011

Wednesday 3rd August

Ongar Pub Walk

Jim

Starting from the Budworth Hall car park in Chipping Ongar at 7:30pm (large car parks on both sides of High St. A128, grid ref TL552031, see map), we’ll be taking a lovely walk of 3 or 4 miles out to Greensted Church (oldest wooden church in the world) and back. We should be in The Cock in Ongar from about 9pm.

YHA Eastbourne

Friday 5th to Sunday 7th August

Eastbourne Hostel

Dave P

YHA Eastbourne has been recently rebuilt (you may remember that the old hostel burnt down shortly before we were due to go there in 2004) and provides comfortable accommodation in a splendid location with views over the town to the sea.  It’s about a mile to the town centre and seafront, and very close to the South Down Way which takes you up to Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters.  And if you want to go cycling, the nearby Cuckoo Trail provides an easy traffic-free route.

Deposit £37 to book. (Total cost will be about £60)

Wednesday 10th August

Committee Meeting

We’ll be looking at walks and Wednesdays for November – all contributions very welcome.

Cycling on the Flitch Way

Sunday 14th August

Cycle Ride on the Flitch Way

Dave P

Meet at 10.30am in Gt Dunmow (long stay car park in White Hart Way), for a ride to Rayne and beyond, using country lanes and the Flitch Way cycle track.

Wednesday 17th  August

Hadrian’s Wall History & Planning

Dave P

Join us for an evening looking at Hadrian’s wall. John will give us a talk on the history and we’ll have a chance to look over our plans to walk the length.

Sunday 21st August

Jim’s Barbecue

Jim

It’s August, so the weather is bound to be perfect for a barbecue. Meet at Jim’s from 2pm. Bring things to barbecue and drink and possibly something to sit on. Jim’s doing bread, salads and burning hot coals.

Wednesday 24th August

Pub Night – The Cricketers

Dave P

Join us for a drink at The Cricketers, Moulsham St, Chelmsford, CM2 0JT, from 8pm. This is the perfect opportunity to toast Dave & Helen & wish them all the best for their wedding tomorrow.

Hadrian's Wall

Friday 26th August to Sunday 4th September

Hadrian’s Wall National Trail

Dave P

We’ll be spending the August Bank Holiday weekend in Northumberland walking on the Hadrian’s Wall long distance path, from the riverside path through the heart of Newcastle, across farmland in Tynedale to the upland dominated by the Whin Sill escarpment. As well as the wall, there are many Roman forts and other archeological sites and museums to visit along the way. And a few of us will stay on to complete the route, descending to the rich pastures of Cumbria and finally the salt marsh of the Solway Estuary – a total distance of 84 miles.

See detailed itinerary for further information. Bookings for this trip are now closed.

Please sponsor us to complete this trek, in aid of the MS Society: www.justgiving.com/CYHATeamHadrian. A big thank you to everyone who's sponsored us so far..

We’ll try to post updates as we walk, see our blog at: www.cyhahadrianswall.blogspot.com
