Writtle Evening Walk

Meet us in the public car park near The Green (close to the duck pond, grid ref TL678062, see map) at Writtle at 7:30pm for a short walk, winding up in the Wheatsheaf about 9ish for a drink.

Committee Meeting

Join us for trip planning for early summer and all the best in local walks. Everybody welcome!


Sunday 15th August

Thaxted Cycle Ride

A ride of 20 miles or so taking in Thaxted, Finchingfield and Great Bardfield with their windmills, teashops and numerous pubs. Bring sarnis for lunch. Meet at the car park in Margaret Street, Thaxted at 10:30am (coming from Dunmow on B184, when you get in to Thaxted, turn right following Car Park & WC signs, see map).

Dining at the Duck

Meet at 7:30pm at the Duck in Newney Green for a slap up meal. Let Cress know in advance if you want to come, so we have some idea of numbers.

To get there, leave Chelmsford on Writtle Rd., pass Writtle Green, turn left (Ongar Rd.) bear right into Victoria Rd, pass Queen Vic pub, and follow the lane for about a mile to Newney Green (Grid ref. TL651070, postcode CM1 3SF, see map)

It’s August, so the weather is bound to be perfect for a barbecue. Meet at Jim’s from 2pm. Please bring things to barbecue and drink. and possibly something to sit on. Jim’s doing bread, salads and burning hot coals.

Heybridge Evening Walk

Meet in the Daisy Meadow car park, Heybridge Basin, at 7:30pm for a walk or about 3 miles, out along the sea wall with views across the Blackwater Estuary, and back on the canal towpath, followed by a drink at The Old Ship (Heybridge Basin is signposted from the B1026 between Heybridge and Goldhanger, grid ref TL870069, see map).



Friday 27th to Monday 30th August

Peak District Hostel Tour

On Friday night we’ll stay at YHA Hartington Hall, a particularly luxurious hostel in a magnificent manor house in the White Peak countryside. On Saturday we walk about 9 miles to YHA Ilam Hall, a Victorian Gothic mansion near Dovedale. Then for Sunday a walk of 12 miles or so to YHA Youlgreave, a former Co-op village shop near the River Bradford and Lathkill Dale.  And finally on the Bank Holiday Monday we complete the circuit with a walk of 6 miles back to Hartington.

Deposit £80 to book please. Total cost will be about £115. for the three nights, food and petrol.
