This walk combines the gorgeous countryside of Essex with an exciting train ride. We will be walking near North Fambridge, mostly along the banks of the River Crouch.

Meet at Ferryboat Inn - North Fambridge at 10.00am (grid ref TQ853967, see map). River walk to Burnham - 9 miles. Bring a packed lunch for river side stop and tea stop at Burnham. Return by train from Burnham station to North Fambridge station and walk back to Ferry Boat Inn.

Wednesday 7th August

An Evening in the Garden

Saffron Walden hostel garden

Dave P

Please join us for a delightful summer evening at Saffron Walden YH; one of the oldest buildings in a charming medieval town. A chance to see how the garden is doing after our work to restore it over the last few years. Come to the hostel any time from 6pm for a barbecue with a little light weeding and odd jobs in the garden, followed by a thirst-quencher in the pub over the road. (If you let Dave know you're coming, we'll make sure there are plenty of burgers etc. on the barbecue).

Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th August

Castle Hedingham hostel

Cycling to Castle Hedingham

Jim

Some pleasant Essex scenery, hopefully in better weather than when we last did this three years ago!

On Saturday, we will be cycling from Chelmsford to Castle Hedingham. Spend Saturday night at the Youth Hostel in this picturesque town with its Norman Castle and half timbered houses. Pub meal on Saturday evening. Cycle back to Chelmsford on Sunday. It's likely to be about 30 miles each way largely using quiet country lanes.

Meet outside the YMCA at 10 o'clock on Saturday morning (note: if bringing your bike by car, you'll need to park elsewhere).

£12 needed to book your bed.

Wednesday 14th August

Committee Meeting

Join us discussing October events and weekends away later in the year. Everybody is welcome.

Sunday 18th August

Birthday Celebration I - Jim's BBQ

Jim

Help Jim celebrate another passing year by joining him for a beer and burger from 2pm onwards at Jim's house. Bring things to barbecue and drink. Everybody welcome - please let Jim know if you're coming. Parking can be tricky, so if you can car share it helps.

Wednesday 21st August

Birthday Celebration II

Jim

Missed Jim's Birthday Barbie? or just fancy another beer with some mates? Feel free to join us in the celebrations. We'll be at the Y sorting out final arrangements for the coming weekend until about 9.30pm when we'll be propping up the bar in the Original Plough (in Duke Street near the railway bridge).

Friday 23rd to Monday 26th August (Bank Holiday)

Slaidburn hostel

Slaidburn Hostel

Dave P

Slaidburn is a charming and secluded village, off the main tourist routes, on the edge of the Forest of Bowland in the Lancashire Pennines. The Forest of Bowland is a relatively undiscovered Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty dominated by gritstone fells and vast tracts of heather-covered moorland.

This small hostel was once the 17th Century Black Bull Inn in the centre of the village and provides a good base for walks avoiding the bank holiday crowds. Pub and teashop nearby.

£28 deposit please. Estimated total cost £58 for 3 nights including meals and petrol contribution.

Wednesday 28th August

Tearfund

Lynn

Come along to this exciting and inspiring evening in Kelvedon. Hear about some interesting tales of TearFund's Emergency Relief work. Bring your pennies to buy Tearfund fair trade craft work, food or furniture. Besides the shop, the House at Kelvedon has a history of its own and the owners will be happy to show us around as well as providing us with tea and cakes.

Do try to come along - essential to let Lynn know if you will be coming (even if it's just the day before).

Meet in Kelvedon at 8pm (directions from Lynn)

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
