Easter Trip to the Lake District

Dave P

Hawse End and Derwent Water

We have booked Hawse End Cottage for 5 nights, near Portinscale in the Lake District. The location is outstanding, at the foot of Catbells, on the shore of Derwent Water. Easy access to both Borrowdale and Newlands Valley, you can walk the Newlands Horseshoe from the door, about 3 miles to walk to Keswick, and the Keswick Launch calls at Hawse End giving lots of options for walks around the lake.

Directions: From Penrith and the M6 – Take Exit 40 and follow A66 follow road signposted for Portinscale, just west of Keswick junction. Follow the road through Portinscale continuing for approx. 3 miles following signs for Hawse End Centre. Pass the Derwentwater Marina and go straight on past two right hand signposts to Ullock and Stair. The turning to the centre is on the left directly opposite the Swinside Lodge Hotel. Follow this drive along to Hawse End Centre, the Cottage is further along the road (postcode CA12 5UE, grid ref NY250210, see map).

All bed-linen is provided.

Some of us are planning to extend the trip until 27th April with a few days hostel-to-hostel trekking taking in Langdale, Wasdale, Ennerdale and Buttermere. Please let Dave know as soon as possible if you’re interested in this option.

£40 deposit to book a bed please (there are fewer beds than we had last year, so book early to avoid disappointment!). Total cost will be about £20 per night including meals, plus £45 towards petrol for those sharing lifts from Essex.

Wednesday 23rd April

Curry Night – Coach & Horses

Jim

Join Jim at the Coach and Horses in Billericay for one of their special curry nights. £9.95 gets you a trio of curries to try, which is probably enough for two people. Meet at 7:30pm (Chapel Street, CM12 9LU, near Waitrose).

Let Jim know by 9th April (i.e. before Easter) if you want to come.

Wednesday 30th April

Any of you familiar with the comedian from his appearances on Radio 4’s the Now Show will surely want to join us. £13 to Dave P will get you a ticket – whilst stocks last!
