Kepplewray Centre

Thursday 5th April to Tuesday 10th April

Lake District at Easter

Dave P

Our original plan to stay at Rydal Hall Youth Centre has had to change due to building repairs in progress at Rydal. Instead, we've got beds for 5 nights at the Kepplewray Centre at Broughton in Furness. This is a different part of the Lake District (the south west edge). There are nearby walks in the Dunnerdale Fells and on Black Combe, it's not far to the Coniston Fells, and we could get to Eskdale and Wasdale. There are also coastal walks nearby, and a choice of pubs within a few minutes walk. So this will be a good opportunity to explore a different part of the Lake District.

Stickle Pike and Dunnerdale

They've offered full board at a very reasonable price (roughly the same as Rydal would have cost).

Directions: About 35-45 minutes drive from the M6. From M6 junction 36 follow A590 and A5092, which becomes A595 at Grizebeck. Then for 4 miles the road takes a number of sharp bends followed by a straight section which leads to a sharp left bend with a large lay-by on the right (old quarry). After this bend turn right signed 'Local Traffic'. After a mile turn right into the main drive for Broughton CE School. The Kepplewray Centre is just beyond the school. (Postcode is LA20 6HE, grid ref SD214873, see map)

If anyone wants to come by train, Foxfield railway station is 1 mile away.

Deposit of £40 to book your place please. I need confirmation of which nights you want to stay and balance of money for accommodation by 22nd March. Total cost will be £20 per night including all meals (catering is provided by the Centre), plus around £40 towards petrol for those sharing lifts from Essex. All bedding is provided.

Wednesday 11th April

Committee Meeting

Come and join us. We’ll be looking for events for July and weekend trips for the Autumn

Wednesday 18th April

Theatre: Sense & Sensibility

Cress

Join us at the Civic Theatre at 7:45pm for a production of Jane Austen’s classic novel as a stage play. Sense and Sensibility is a comedy of manners, marriage and much gossip... (see review). We’ve made a group booking, so please give £12 to Dave P by 14th March if you’d like to come.

The Civic Theatre is in Fairfield Road, Chelmsford (car park access from Coval Lane)

El Chigre Tapas Bar

Wednesday 25th April

Tapas Night

Jim

Join us at El Chigre tapas bar in Moulsham Street at 7:30pm for dinner with that Spanish edge. Jim’s planning to book a table, so let him know by the 18th April if you plan to come.

34 Moulsham Street, CM2 0HX, see map

Weald Park

Sunday 29th April

Weald Country Park

Doug

Help Doug celebrate his (very) significant birthday by joining him on a walk through Weald Country Park, affording lakes abundant in bird-life, superb views over undulating grassland, and magnificent woodland, carpeted in bluebells in Spring.

Bring sandwiches for lunch, but do leave room for tea back at Doug's, to which all are invited.

Meet at 10.30am at the Visitor Centre car park in Weald Road, Brentwood.  Follow the brown country park signs from the M25 Junction 28 turn off. After South Weald village, the 2nd entrance on the right leads to the Visitor Centre.

Or if you can’t come on the walk, you’re welcome for tea at Doug’s house from about 4.30pm. It would be helpful, but not essential, to let Doug know in advance if you are planning to come.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
