The Eskdale Centre

Thursday 1st to Tuesday 6th April

Eskdale, Lake District

Dave P

Spend Easter at Eskdale in the south western part of the Lake District, close to Scafell and Wastwater. The Eskdale Centre, refurbished since our last visit, is a former village school now used as an outdoor centre. It has dormitories, showers, full central heating and a well equipped kitchen (You'll need to bring a sleeping bag).

The Ravenglass and Eskdale miniature steam railway runs from Dalegarth station (100m from the centre) to the coast at Ravenglass. There are many options for walks between stations on the line. Other nearby attractions include Muncaster castle, Hardknott Roman fort, Muncaster and Eskdale water mills, a choice of pubs, and England's highest mountains!

Scafell, view from above Boot

The centre is available to us for five nights. It is easily reached from the A595 Barrow to Whitehaven road, via Santon Bridge. Half a mile east of Eskdale Green, turn off opposite George IV pub, towards Boot and Hardknott. The centre is on the left after 1½ miles, opposite the track to Trough House Bridge. Grid ref NY172006, see map. (If you get to Dalegarth station you've gone 100m too far). The car park is small, but there is ample additional parking at the top of the centre's field.

Deposit £30 to book your bed. Total will be about £16 per night for bed and food, plus about £35 petrol contribution if sharing a lift.
