There’s just time to brush up on your map reading before the Easter trip – and what better way than with a master class from our very own Dave P. All you ever wanted to know about contours and bearings, but were afraid to ask.

Wednesday 8th April: No Meeting

Thursday 9th to Tuesday 14th April

Easter in the Lake District

Dave P

Five nights at Shackleton Lodge, self-catering accommodation in woodland in the grounds of Brathay Hall, about a mile from Ambleside and four miles from Langdale.

Shackleton Lodge is situated on the Brathay Hall estate at the northern end of Windermere.

Directions: Exit the M6 at junction 36 and merge onto the A590 (signposted Barrow A590 and Windermere, Kendal A591). Follow the A591 to Ambleside. From Ambleside follow the A593 signed Coniston and after a mile turn left onto the B5286 towards Hawkshead. Turn left into the main drive for Brathay Hall in about 300 yards (postcode for satnav is LA22 0HP, grid ref NY366027, see map).

Shackleton Lodge is in the woods beyond Brathay Hall.  Drive slowly over the cattle grid and follow the main drive  until the ’T’ junction, where you turn right, passing between a car park on the left and buildings on the right. Take the left fork signposted ’Exploration Group Field Quarters’. Please park carefully and do not block the access to the field beyond the buildings. You need to bring a sleeping bag.

Deposit £30 to book your place.  Cost will be around £18 per night including food, plus about £30 petrol contribution for those sharing lifts from Essex.

Sunday 26th April

Canal Walk

Jim

Celebrate Spring with a bracing walk the length of the Chelmer Blackwater Navigation (about 14 miles). Meet at the Heybridge Basin Daisy Meadow car park (grid ref TL870069, see map) at 10:00am (Heybridge Basin is signposted from the B1026 between Heybridge and Goldhanger). We’ll leave most of our cars at Heybridge Basin, and organise lifts to Chelmsford, to walk back to Heybridge. Please be sure to bring sandwiches for lunch. We’ll also stop for tea in the afternoon at Paper Mill lock, and probably finish with a pint at The Old Ship. Please let Jim know if you’re planning to come.

Wednesday 29th April

Yellowstone Slides

Dave P

September 2008 saw Dave, Ali & Nigel take off to the States for a camping trip amongst the thermal features of Yellowstone and the jagged peaks of the Grand Teton. We even managed to fit in a gun fight and still survived to tell you about it. Has to be seen to be believed.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
