Our traditional 14 mile walk along the Chelmer-Blackwater Navigation. This year we plan to meet at the Heybridge Basin car park (grid ref TL870069, see map) at 10:00am for a car shuffle before walking from Chelmsford back to Heybridge. No guaranteed lunch stop, so please be sure to bring sandwiches.

Wednesday 5th April

Mountain Safety & Navigation

Essential training for our Easter break. A reminder on how to use a compass and route find. Also a chance to whet your appetite for the superb walks we can look forward to over the Bank Holiday.

Queen's Head Pub Night

Dave J

For those of you not heading off to the Easter trip early, Dave is hosting an evening down the pub. So join him from 8:30 for a pint or two and envy those on the way to Cumbria.

The Queens Head is in Lower Anchor Street, Chelmsford. (Grid Ref TL702063, see map).

Rydal Hall Youth CentreThursday 13th to Tuesday 18th April 2006

Lake District at Easter

Dave P

We have booked Rydal Hall Youth Centre for 5 nights, near Ambleside in the Lake District. Sheltered by the high fells of Fairfield and its neighbours, Rydal enjoys outstanding views toward Windermere, and provides an excellent base for walking.

There is a large common room, a games room with table tennis and pool, toilets, showers and drying racks, and a well equipped kitchen. There are four dormitories with bunk beds for 36. You'll need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow case.

To find it, follow A591 for two miles north from Ambleside. In Rydal, turn right into the lane towards Rydal Mount, pass the church and take the second entrance on the right (just beyond the main gate of the hall). Pass behind the hall and the youth centre is just beyond the bridge on the left.

Deposit of £30 to book please. Total cost will be about £14 per night for bed and meals, plus £30 towards petrol.

Wednesday 19th April

Committee Meeting

We will be trip planning for the Summer and organising Wednesday evening activities for June.

Sunday 23rd April

Weald Walkers Wander

Cressida

This is an annual event organised by Croydon YHA Group. The walk this year will be about 10 miles and based around Hurst Green, a village in Surrey. In a team of 2 to 5 people, you'll need to solve clues to find each checkpoint and your map and compass skills will also be put to the test. Points are awarded for completing quizzes and games, at the checkpoints. A trophy is awarded to the winning team. If you're interested, please contact Cressida to see if we can get a team together.

Wednesday 26th April

The Story of Chelmsford

John M

Nick Wickenden of Chelmsford Museum will be giving a slideshow and talk on the archaeology of Chelmsford, concentrating in particular on the Roman and Mediaeval periods. Nick gave the club an informative and interesting talk and slideshow on Hylands House some years ago and we look forward to seeing him again. Please make every effort to attend as it is not often that we have a guest speaker. We will be starting promptly at 8:30pm.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
